Morning Thoughts – Holding On
Holding On
I heard this story once about a very wealthy man who had bargained
with God to allow him to bring one thing with him to heaven when he
died. Upon arrival to the gates of heaven, he had a suit case with him.
St. Peter told him he could not bring it in with him. The man assured
St. Peter he had God’s permission to bring this suit case with him.
St. Peter said “You will have to leave it at the gate until I get an OK from
God, it’s highly irregular.” Then man left his suit case at the gate. When
St. Peter opened the suit case, there were bars of gold inside. He said,
“Why would anyone bring pavement to heaven?” Is there something of
earthly value to which you hold tightly? Let it go if it is of no heavenly value.
Jesus said, “For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever
shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel’s, the same shall save it. For
what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his
own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?”
Mark 8:35-37 (KJV)
